Germany's Troop Deployment to Ukraine Sparks Controversy

(MENAFN) Germany’s potential involvement in a peacekeeping force in Ukraine, as part of a future agreement with Russia, has ignited strong political debate within the country.

Opposition parties are pushing back firmly against the idea, expressing deep reservations about sending German soldiers abroad under such conditions.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), currently topping national opinion polls, has issued fierce criticism of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s center-right CDU/CSU bloc.

They oppose its openness to contributing German troops to Ukraine alongside other European military units.

"The hawks in the CDU can hardly wait to send German soldiers to foreign war zones again," stated AfD co-leader Alice Weidel via social media.

She cautioned that such an "irresponsible" move could lead to "dangerous" repercussions for Germany’s national stability.

Criticism also came from the socialist Left Party, which rejected the idea of German forces participating in a NATO-led mission. Instead, they recommended a peacekeeping initiative governed by the United Nations, emphasizing the need for international legitimacy.

"Ukraine urgently needs concrete security guarantees in case of a peace agreement with Russia. However, these should absolutely be decided and implemented within the framework of the United Nations," declared Left Party co-chair Jan van Aken in an official release.

He dismissed the argument that NATO troops must be present along the Russian-Ukrainian frontier, warning that such a stance is both flawed and hazardous.

Van Aken highlighted the risk of minor skirmishes escalating into major conflicts, referencing historical examples where misinterpretations at contested borders led to broader clashes.

This national debate intensified following Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s discussions with US President Donald Trump and European leaders earlier this week.

After the talks, Merz signaled Germany’s willingness to consider participating in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, should a resolution with Russia be reached.
